Why I’d choose Miami–Notre Dame over every other game

Miami won 13 games last season but again starts behind Notre Dame in both major polls. Their Nov. 7 rematch brings that ranking dispute to South Bend after two months of football.

The game I’d choose above every other one on the 2026 schedule arrives Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Ohio State, ranked No. 1 in both preseason polls, visits Texas on Sept. 12. Texas begins No. 5 in one poll and No. 4 in the Coaches Poll. That’s a top-five game in the second week, before either program has accumulated the wear of a full season.

I’m still taking the November game.

“The number one game in the country that I'd want to take anyone to this year is Miami at Notre Dame.”

Miami finished 13-3 last season, including 6-2 in the ACC. Notre Dame finished 10-2.

Notre Dame lost a close game at Miami last season and still appeared ahead of the Hurricanes when the first playoff rankings came out. Miami eventually moved past the Irish, but Notre Dame again starts ahead before either team plays a snap: Notre Dame is No. 4 in one poll and No. 5 in the Coaches Poll, while Miami is No. 7 in both.

Miami will have gone through Clemson and Florida State before traveling to South Bend, with Clemson on the road. Notre Dame will have played North Carolina and BYU away from home. The committee’s first rankings will likely already be out by kickoff.

Miami’s trip to Notre Dame will be its fifth road date of the season, one week after playing at North Carolina. The Hurricanes will have spent two months showing how their team travels before they walk into South Bend at night, possibly with temperatures in the 40s.

Both teams still have three games afterward. Miami closes with Duke, Virginia Tech and Boston College; Notre Dame finishes with Boston College, SMU and Syracuse. I want the pressure of a late-season game that can shape everything still in front of both teams.

The campuses and cultures could hardly look more different. The football matters, too: two recent runners-up, a ranking dispute and a prime-time rematch.
